I can see why people like blonde better, despite me and other's beveling that channel orange is better.Ĭhannel Orange is physical and Blonde is mental. This album successfully puts feelings into sound waves and makes the listener feel them. "I'm sure we're taller in another dimension" for example, what does height have to do with this? What does frank see height as? This sentence is abstract enough that many people put there own feelings to this line and frank might have his own. Frank consistently throws random line that don't seem to be related, but when you dig deeper they kinda do, these lines seem to me like impulse thoughts that just come out. Songs are setup to be a feeling or mood or memory. Not as lyrical heavy as channel orange, but more abstract symbolism is used as mentioned beforeįrank avoids describing his lover / lovers in this and it seems like he is purposely doing this, because of this it makes it so much more easy to relate, you get more of how he's feeling than what going on. More focused on abstract imagery, songs feel more like a dream than an event, a dream that feels like you actually had before.ĭifferent singing styles and vocals are used to describe different moods, rather than using lyrics and more over production

This album also makes franks 'average' life seem like a movie and adventure like no other.Īvoids contemporary rnb and lets other genres in play with making new sounds (Art Pop, Ambient Pop) Pop is big on this album (pop genre not pop as in 'popular') This album is LITERALLY a transition to a new era of rnb. Example, Pyramids represent actual ancient pyramids and the power of Africa, prostitution / (vegas maybe.), penis and legs under bed sheets. He does this by making his songs revolve around powerful symbol yet keep those symbols representing different ideas. Every song is a moment of his life that is magnified to be grand and movie like. Very descriptive when frank talkers about his lovers (gender, personality etc) excluding Thinkin bout you. One main singing style used through entire album, the frank signature, a bit nasal like and high. More focused on imagery to describe these events Very good understanding of rnb history and uses it to describe different elaborate stories through the album to understand the setting of the story better Here is the difference between the 2 albums Ocean has always been an iconoclast in the making, weaving criticism with comedy, happiness with melancholy.

The reason I say this too is channel orange uses rnb elements more than and better than blonde, while blonde focus more on making a new sound all together. Now that his third album, Blonde, is out, we can look back at his previous work with an eye for maturity and personal progression. Blonde is more of an art pop album to me than alt rnb + other subgenres involved. I personally like to think Channel Orange is the better rnb album, Blonde is the better 'genreless' album if you don't see it as an rnb album and mostly just for the music and new sounds. Big Frank fan, I love both co and blonde, but i feel many people don't understand how both these albums do 2 different things.
